Program Purpose
  • Gibson County Youth Theatre produces several shows a year that incorporate singing, dancing and acting.  For students wanting to improve their performance skills, it can be difficult to find classes close to home.  It is especially challenging for older students who are new to performance, since many studios gear their beginner courses toward younger kids.  We feel that by providing this instruction, our company will continue to improve as students become more confident and technically savvy when they perform.
Goals and Performances
  • Last year we offered some general performance workshops with our Triple Threat Program.  Though that program was successful, we feel that offering specific courses, with the goal of performance, will be more beneficial and give the students a tangible goal and work product.  It is our objective that our classes will perform at a winter recital in December and at our annual Variety Show in May.  In addition, individual classes might discuss the possibility of performing at ballgames or local festivals.
Teachers
  • The classes will primarily be taught by students who have experience in their course style and with Gibson County Youth Theatre.  We will carefully match up the teachers with a class of students that we feel the teacher can confidently manage and instruct.  All classes however, will be conducted under adult supervision.  GCYT has used this approach since our inception in 2007.  For our Middle School Productions and Youth Drama Camps, we utilize high school students as mentors and counselors. This concept has served us well because the younger kids look up to the older kids and want to emulate them.  It is also a wonderful leadership experience for the older kids as they develop skills such as organization, planning, teamwork, patience and teaching.
Course Layout
  • We respect that many families reserve Sundays as a day off.  Unfortunately, due to our teachers' very busy school/work/extracurricular schedules, most have said Sunday afternoons is the best time for them to teach.  We are looking at offering courses on Sundays from 1:00-3:00.  Each class will be one hour long and students have the opportunity to take one or two classes.  Based on the age, experience and number of students, each teacher will choreograph routines they will teach to their specific class.  Consistent attendance is very important to the success of each class.
Cost
  • The cost averages out to $10.00 for one class and $15.00 for two classes per week for 15 weeks. Final registration is a commitment for the entire semester since the routines will be choreographed around the number of kids originally registered. The balance due for the semester is $150.00 for one class and $225.00 for two classes.  Families can pay by the week if it is more manageable, however the total balance must be paid by the final class, even if classes are missed. This policy is in place to encourage good attendance which is important to the success of each class. Excessive absences are not fair to the teachers or other kids in the class.
Costumes and Extras
  • We will do our best to select costumes that are fun and appealing to the students, yet age-appropriate and economical. Nothing will be purchased without prior discussion and approval by the families.  In addition, if classes are interested in performing for other events, all members will be consulted before entry.  As this is our first time to tackle classes in this capacity, we ask for your patience as we navigate through the year.  Positive attitudes and good communication will make for a fun and relaxed season!
